ANNUAL RAPTOR MIGRATION PROJECT AT CAPILLA PEAK
HawkWatch International (HWI) monitors the migration of raptors flying over the Manzano Mountains as they head south for the winter. A crew of observers, banders, and an interpreter are on duty daily. Visitors are welcome, and the interpreter will be available to answer visitors’ questions. Some of the birds will be banded and may be brought to the observation area where visitors will learn about that particular species and be able to view birds up close. Eighteen different species of diurnal raptors have been observed at this site. There is less than a mile hike from the parking area to the observation area. Dress in layers and be prepared for weather changes later during the season if you plan to spend a few days at Capilla Peak Campground, which is just beyond the parking area at the trail head of the Gavilan Trail. Bring water, food, sunscreen, camera, and binoculars.
